2011 Elk River Football Coaches
Steve Hamilton is beginning his 1st season as the head football coach at Elk River High School. Coach Hamilton will also be teaching Social Studies at Elk River High School. Prior to arriving at Elk River, Coach Hamilton spent the last four seasons as the head football coach at Woodland High School in Cartersville, Georgia. While there his teams accumulated the second most wins in school history, and broke several offensive records. Before taking over at Woodland, Coach Hamilton was the head football coach at Carlson High School in Gibraltar, Michigan. In his six seasons at Carlson, Coach Hamilton’s teams broke the school records for scoring defense, scoring offense, points in a game, wins in a season, playoff victories, along with several other school records. Due to the success of the team, Coach Hamilton was selected as the Downriver Coach of the Year, and the Monroe County Coach of the Year. Coach Hamilton began his head coaching career by spending three seasons as the head coach at Bad Axe High School in Bad Axe, Michigan. In his three seasons the team made the playoffs for the first time in 20 seasons, and he was selected as Huron County Coach of the Year. Steve is married to Stephanie, a first grade teacher at Hassan Elementary School. They have two daughters, Ella 3 and Sophia 1. Mike Breyen – Varsity Running Backs Coach Mike begins his 19th year coaching in the Elk River Football program. He is the Varsity Running Backs Coach and will coordinate the Specials Teams for the varsity as well coordinate the Strength program for the Elks. Mike is a proud graduate of Elk River High School (1986) where he was a 2-year letter winner in both football and baseball. He was named team captain and to the All-Conference teams in both sports in his senior year. Mike was the MVP of the football team his senior year. Mike attended Hamline University in St. Paul and earned a BA in Physical Education in 1991. He was a four-year letter winner in football and was named team captain his senior year. After graduating from Hamline, Mike attended St. Cloud State where he received a Special Education Licensure as well as his Masters in Special Education. After teaching 15 years at VandenBerge Middle School, Mike begins his second year at Elk River High School teaching Physical Education. Mike is married to Julie, a World History teacher at Zimmerman Middle/High School. They are the proud parents of two girls, Johanna 8 years old and Kaylyn 5 years old, and Bella their dog. John Pink – Varsity Quarterback Coach John begins his fourth year as an assistant coach for the Elks. He is a 1988 graduate of Tartan High School in Oakdale. In high school he was a 3 year letter winner, captain and all-conference in Football, Basketball, Baseball and Track. John attended Normandale Community College and Moorhead State where he played quarterback. He received his B.S. degree in Social Services from the University of Minnesota in 1992. After graduating from college, John went on to play 2 years of minor league baseball. John is happily married to his wife Sandi. They have two children, Trent 12 years old and Grace eight years old and Nike the cat. John Budreau – Varsity Offensive Line Coach John Budreau is native to the Elk River / Zimmerman area, graduated from Princeton High School in 1987. This will be his 6th season coaching varsity football he joins us after spending 4 seasons with Zimmerman High School as their Offensive Coordinator. John is self employee and is married to Anita, they have 3 children Kayla 19 years old, Colton 15 years old and Tucker 11 years old. Brad Olsen – Varsity Defensive and Inside Linebacker Coach Rick begins his third year with Elk River as a physical education teacher at Salk Middle School and as the Varsity Defensive Line Coach. He grew up in Arlington Heights, IL, where he played football at Buffalo Grove High School. Rick attended Trinity International University in Deerfield, IL where he met his wife Andrea and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education and social science. He was a defensive end for the football team and played both football and volleyball at Trinity. Rick and Andrea moved to Minnesota in 2004, but they are still White Sox fans! The Michalak’s have two wonderful children, Ryan (3) and Meghan (1.5). Chad Bladwin – Varsity Offensive Linebacker & Special Teams Coach Chad Baldwin is in his first season with the Elks. He is the Special Teams Coordinator and is coaching outside linebackers for the varsity. Chad played High School Football in Monticello, where he was 2 time All-Conference, Co-Captain, All-State and started in the State High School All-Star Game. In College he played for the Central Lakes College Raiders and the Valley City State Vikings. He received Co-Captain and All-Conference Honors. He played Semi-Professional Football Player for the Central Minnesota Thunderbirds and retired as a player in 2000. Chad earned his BS Degree from Valley City State University and MS Degree from St. Cloud State University Chad and his wife Angela currently live in St. Michael with their twin children Colton and Taylor. They own and operate a Fitness and Wellness company. Mark Leland – Varsity Corners Coach This will be Mark’s sixth year teaching Health and Physical Education at VandenBerge Middle school and his sixth year on staff as a varsity defensive back coach. Mark is a 1999 graduate of Elk River High School where he was a two-sport athlete. He earned 3 letters in football and basketball playing for the Elks. After high school Mark attended UW-River Falls where he also played football. He earned his B.S. degree in Physical Education and Health graduating in 2005. Mark is married to Heidi who is also in education and coaching. They have two children. Their daughter Annabelle is 4 and their son Cooper turned 2 in May. Dan Kohler – Varsity Safeties Coach Daniel Kohler begins his fifth year as assistant coach for the Elks. In his first year he coached at the freshman level as the defensive coordinator. Before coming on the staff Kohler spent four years at Jamestown College in North Dakota, where he played strong and free safety for the Jimmies helping his team to back-to-back national playoffs. He graduated with a business management & accounting degree. He went to Elk River High School from 2000 to 2003, where he played football and baseball for the Elks.
