Varsity Head Coach - Mike Cross

Mike Cross begins his eleventh year teaching Health Education at Elk River High School and coaching football for the Elks. Mike begins his sixh year as head football coach and is looking forward to the 2009 football

season. Prior to teaching and coaching at Elk River High School he was at Braham Area High School (5 yrs.) and at Mahtomedi High School (3 yrs.).

Besides coaching football, Mike enjoys coaching Elk River athletes in the strength and speed class during the off-season. He is an active member in the Elk River Youth Football Association.  Mike received a B.S. in physical education and health education with a coaching minor from the University

of Wisconsin-River Falls in 1991. While at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Mike was a four-year letterman on the Falcons football team. In 2001 he received his M.S. in education from St. Mary’s University.  Mike is currently attending Hamline University to obtain an administrative licensure.  Mike is married to Christine, a first-grade teacher at St. Andrew’s of Elk River. They have two children,  Derek, 15 and Melissa, 12, and their dog, Cooper.


Sophomore Head Coach - Mike Breyen

Mike begins his 17th season as an assistant football coach at Elk River. Mike is the Head Coach of the 10th grade team and he coordinates the special teams and is the strength coordinator for the Elks.  Mike is a graduate of Elk River High School (1986) where he was a 2-year letter winner in both football and baseball and was named to the All-Conference teams in both sports in his senior year. He was a captain of both his football and baseball teams and was named MVP of the football team his senior year.  Mike attended Hamline University in St.Paul and earned a bachelor of arts degree in Physical Education in 1991. While playing at Hamline from 1986–1989, he lettered four years and was named captain his senior year.  Mike attended St. Cloud State University where he earned his Special Education Teaching licensure and received his master’s in Special Education. Mike teaches Physical Education at Elk River High School. His wife, Julie, is a Social Studies teacher at Zimmerman Middle/High School. They have two daughters, Johanna (7), Kaylyn (4), and a dog, Jasper.


Freshman Head Coach – Phil Johnson

Phil begins his 22nd year as head coach of the freshman football team. A graduate of Elk River High School, Phil was a three-sport letter winner in football, basketball and baseball. He graduated from St. John’s University with a degree in Natural Science, and played football and baseball. He received his master’s degree from Hamline University.  Phil teaches Wildlife Biology at ERHS.  His wife, Teri, is an instructional assistant at Zimmerman Elementary School. His son, Matt teaches Physical Education at Hassan Elementary. Daughter, Jenna, is employed with Enterprise Media in San Francisco, California. Phil, along with his father Mag (’31), were inducted into the 2007 ERHS Hall of Fame.
